Yesterday was Palm Sunday, a day when the worship service in many churches begins with the Litany of the Palms and then moves on to the reading of the Passion of Christ. We join those early Christians in their excitement of watching their Messiah come into town, and weep as we see even his own people betray him. Going from joy to despair, happiness to grief, abundance to loss, and often back again is the story of the church year. Again and again, we move through the story, just as again and again we move through the seasons of nature. And, again and again, we move through the joy-despair-joy, happiness-grief-happiness, abundance-loss-abundance times of our own lives. Perhaps that’s an underlying teaching of today — moving through to move on — is part of life, as are the emotions we feel as we go through Holy Week, moving toward the joy of Easter!
